Natural hazards abound in the BOP - lucky us!
In fact wherever you are in NZ there is one hazard or another ready to make trouble. Hazards like floods, earthquakes and volcanoes. Understanding our natural hazards is a foundation for building resilient communities and Steve will share the results of several recent studies in our region and set these into a natural hazard context for Tauranga. We will also look at some uses of the information and particularly how it can help identify resilience building projects and guide new city planning rules. Several hazard web-viewers will be demonstrated - bring your laptop so you can try it yourself on the night.

Steve is a Civil Engineer and recently served as resilience specialist at TCC developing hazard mapping and mitigation projects to bring resilience in the civil infrastructure. Previously he has worked in numerous countries engineering in environments from the hot Arabian deserts (where flooding is a hazard!) to the steaming jungles of Papua New Guinea and at times dealing with civil unrest - one of the few hazards that NZ is free of. Steve is currently a Doctoral candidate at Waikato University developing multi-hazard mapping techniques.
